Lucky and the Remedy Recovery E-Collar

While bathing Lucky we noticed a sore on his back above his tail. It was at this time we decided it was best to get him an E-collar to prevent him from aggravating the area more.

If you are not familiar with E- collar's,  they are often used for pets after surgery, for hot spots, to prevent licking off medications and to aid in preventing self-inflicting wounds.

We walked into our local pet store and my husband asked the clerk to direct us to the cone of shame. The clerk had no idea what he was talking about. My husband then opted to describe a chunky piece of plastic that's cone-shaped and often utilized to keep a dog from licking at a sore or an injury.

It was at this time we learned the pet store carries many different collars and they actually promote the inflatables more than the plastic.

The clerk had to climb up on a ladder along the east side wall to get down the Remedy Recovery Collar we elected to purchase.

We'd read up on E-collars and we like that this E- collar is lightweight and made of durable plastic. It has safe padded edges and comes in five sizes that accommodate most animals. Additionally, it has adjustable snaps.

We had no issues in placing the collar on Lucky. It's been on a day and we expected Lucky would be frustrated and constantly trying to get it off but he hasn't.

Here are a few tips for the issues that did occur.

Eating
An issue we soon learned was feeding time. Depending on your dogs and the dog’s size of his e-collar, eating may be an issue. We have raised food bowls for Lucky and our other cockapoos but we had to place Lucky's bowl out away from the wall to allow him access it more easily. We did like the fact that when the plastic gets wet or dusty, it's easily wiped off.

Make Room
Obstacles inside the house may get in the way and your dog will need to learn how to navigate around them.  Our furniture is typically placed against the wall so our dogs have a lot of room to roam and play but we did store our breakables away.

Avoid the Dog Park
Dogs need time to heal, so we've avoided dog parks and places we know that he will be tempted to romp with other dogs. He does still play inside, however, with our dogs.

Challenge
The biggest challenge for us is Lucky is a friendly dog who often sets on our lap. When he sits up, we are unable to see the computer screen as the E-collar is our sight path.

Relax
Owning many dogs, we quickly learned that it's good to walk a dog who has excessive energy. The more tired Lucky is, the less likely he’ll attempt to run around inside the house or lick his injury.

Lucky has adapted well to this E- collar and it's appropriately colored green for the month of March so perhaps the Luck of the Irish is with Lucky after all.
