Prior to tackling the hike along the Vermilion riverbed, we wanted to see what Motley could handle. So, we decided to take a short easy trail that is open to leashed pets but closed to bicycles.
The Bacon Woods Trail is a wooded loop and we could immediately see it had a decent canopy which would provide good shade for the cockapoos.
We found that much of Bacon Woods is a natural habitat. Less than 10% is developed and it appears to be bottomland deciduous forest where there's evidence of occasional flooding.
This makes the perfect soil for many trees to develop unique characteristics to allow submergence.
Due to the mix of river, meadow, and woods, this is an excellent habitat for many species of birds.
To our surprise, much of the trail was covered in crushed stone.
During this time of year, the area below was dry but there are two well-kept boardwalks located over intermittent watercourses that seep or flow depending on the amount of rainfall.
We found it to be an easy trail that is suitable for anyone.
And we soon found we were not the only ones who were enjoying the flora and fauna.
Near the river, there is shelter and picnic tables, with lots of grassy areas and plenty of parking.
