Mill Hollow - Vermilion River Reservation

Attractions at Mill Hollow include the Carriage Barn and Bacon House Museum. This area offers visitors information about the park and hosts nature programs throughout the year. The rustic meeting room can be reserved for groups

The Vermilion River Reservation is known for its impressive wetlands adjacent the river which provide a wonderful habitat for bald eagles and other wildlife.

Much of Mill Hollow is any hiker's delight. There are wooded and prairie trails, where you'll find forks and switchbacks through wetlands, woodlands, and meadows.

We chose to descend down this leaf-laden trail. As you descend and incline you will see grasslands and sagebrush patches on hillsides.

This path led to this riverbed where we spent time hiking.

This area is home to a variety of seasonal wildflowers, plants, amphibians, and reptiles.  Anglers know this is a paradise for them as the river is generally filled with smallmouth bass and steelhead trout.

Our purpose was however not to fish but to take in the breathtaking beauty of these amazing cliffs which reveal layers of sandstone, shale, and turtle rock.

This winding ribbon of shale cliffs carved by the Vermilion River is breathtaking.

The Vermilion River Reservation is a habitat for the American Bald Eagle,  Great Blue Heron, Greenback Heron, and many other wildlife species.

Throughout Mill Hollow, there are many beautiful trails to enjoy scattered with Dutchman's Breeches, Bloodroot, and Virginia Bluebell and we especially liked this one down here along the river.
