National Scenic Byway

my husband took this photo of me along one of my favorite spots- Catawba Island Beach

I started this blog as a place to display pictures of our dogs, and detail adventures we take in our neck of the woods near and along the National Scenic Byway. But if you are not familiar with this term basically it means a road that has a combination of archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, and scenic qualities.

I’m aware of the benefits of green space. Green space includes cemeteries, community gardens, parks, playgrounds, public seating areas, reserves, schoolyards, and vacant lots.

We are fortunate in that we have many marshes, prairies, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and wetlands throughout our state.

During our work week, my husband above, and I are busy. When we're away from work, we try to make tranquility a priority.

Serenity

Green space affords an opportunity for self-discovery where we can figure out how to deal with those things which might be causing discontent. It also helps promotes self- discovery and allows us a chance for renewal.

It’s true, we can’t all escape to the mountains or a tropical island and some of us may not find that peaceful anyway, but what we can do is change our focus to something we’d find enjoyable.

We don’t have teleporters that will beam us up to a new location, and we have limited funds, so in the winter months we often getaway to enjoy the nearest botanical gardens. Here we are able to enjoy nature while being inspired by artwork and other features.

Silence  & Noise

I admit, I sometimes find it difficult to balance silence and noise. And, unless you’re wearing noise-canceling headphones, life is filled with noise. I thought of this more after reading about  James Stockdale using tap code while held as a P.O.W. and how calming and yet frightening that must have been. If you want to read more about him, Dragon's Jaw will be available in May.

As I sit here typing this it is 6:30am, I hear my dogs and husband breathing, the hum of electric devices in the other room. Occasionally, I hear a click I recognize as our space heater and every so often the sound of cars passing by down the road.

We live in a more remote location than many so there’s likely to be less noise here.

It has been snowing the past few days and winter landscapes are often calming to me perhaps that's partly because snow absorbs sound.

I’ll give you some examples of how sounds affect me. Earlier this morning I listened to NASA sounds in space – the one where electromagnetic vibrations that pulsate in similar wavelengths are used to provide sounds from the various planets. And, while I found earth to be somewhat peaceful reminding me of a day lying on the beach or resting on the ground near an airfield. I found Saturn to be very grating almost like nails on a chalkboard.

Tranquility

A restful afternoon  at City Beach, Port Clinton Ohio

Leonardo Da Vinci stated the importance of water with this famous quote: "Water is the vehicle of nature". Ever notice how many hospitals have a pond near them? Some even have one in the interior. My dentist must have caught onto this as he's had an aquarium in his office for years. Yes! Water is a symbol of tranquility, relaxation, and renewal.  So if you're searching for a more restful existence make time to do something you enjoy - in my case that is often enjoying green space while reading near or along the National Scenic Byway.
