R.I.P. Lucky

Today, I begin my staycation. I was planning to spend some time at home with the 4 dogs but Lucky passed on Sunday night.  He was our youngest dog and the first to leave us. We miss him greatly!

When we adopted Lucky on Valentine's Day in 2019, we knew he was special. He hopped when he walked and he never missed a throw. No kidding he caught every ball and every treat from whatever distance. He was wonderful about letting us know when he needed to go outside and he was often patiently waiting for us to return home. We know that as we check in on the dogs through our pet camera.

Back in 2020, when Lucky first showed signs of paralysis we struggled with the decision of quality of life, and euthanizing him as the vet did not give us much hope. However, we read up on spinal cord disorders and Degenerative Myelopathy and believe that the physical rehabilitation and water therapy gave us more time with Lucky.

Throughout the years Lucky was showing no signs of pain and seemed to enjoy spending time with his canine companions and us.

We agreed to be his caregivers and carry him to and fro when he wasn't in his wheelchair. We spent our time trying to make him comfortable and loved. In return, Lucky showed much courage and gave us unconditional love. We had a strong sense of purpose as he was such a valuable companion.

Lucky had been having urinary and bowel incontinence and was showing weakness in the shoulders. We have been informed that the final stages of DM can progress very quickly, and a dog’s condition can deteriorate rapidly and often overnight.

Over the weekend we knew he was in the end stages. Lucky was lethargic on Saturday evening and slept a lot. We planned to have him euthanized on Monday when our vet hospital reopened. Sunday, we had more hope as Lucky perked up and ate some food, drank water, and laid out on the porch with us. I went to work Sunday night and prior to midnight my husband contacted me and told me Lucky was having a seizure. Lucky passed  Sunday, at home, with my husband and our other 3 dogs present.

We find this statement is true- Having a dog will bless you with many of the happiest days of your life, and one of the worst." — Unknown
