After more than 15 years of being part of our family, Buddy’s absence is felt in so many little ways. The house feels different without him, and there are moments when we expect to see him resting in his favorite spot or hear him moving through the house.
We are now a family of three dogs—Coco, Bindi, and Lily—and while they may not understand death in exactly the same way we do, they certainly seem to understand that Buddy is no longer here.
Since Buddy passed on August 15th, all three dogs have become noticeably more clingy. They want to be closer to us and to each other. They follow one another from room to room and seem to seek out extra reassurance and comfort. There is a sense that they know something important has changed.
Perhaps they are looking for the companionship they once found in Buddy. Perhaps they are simply responding to the sadness and change they feel around them. Whatever the reason, we are giving them plenty of patience, affection, and reassurance as they adjust to this new chapter.
I expect Coco, Bindi, and Lily may continue to be extra attached for a while, and that is perfectly okay. We are all adjusting to life without Buddy in our own ways.
Our home is now filled with three dogs, two people, and countless memories of a wonderful dog who will always be part of our family. Buddy may no longer be lying beside us, following us through the house, or greeting us in his familiar way, but his presence is still woven into our home and into the lives of everyone who loved him.
